Thanks to RobstenLoveI have a theory that Edward looked hottest in Twilight because Catherine Hardwicke was the only female director of the saga. I know there were quite a few fail elements in there, but there were many things that I will always thank her for. And getting Edward’s look right is definitely one of them.
Sweeping stereotype in 3, 2, 1… As women, we care about appearances. It’s a fact, ladies, and you know it. As a gender, we are typically more concerned with looks than our male counterparts (although I know some men that could give me a run for my money in that dept). To me, Edward in Twilight is hot from the sex-hair down to his Nikes! We also saw (and loved) the debut of the peacoat, the raybans, and the prom tux, and we swooned over all of it. Was it because the director was female and heavily involved in designing the leads that made Edward look best under her watch?
The other Twi films have all been directed by men. I love u CWeitz, but NewMoonWard looked like Bella’s college philosophy professor (a really hot one, but still) instead of her 17-year-old vamp boyfriend. The whole teacher/student relaysh is hot, but that wasn’t necessarily the look you should have been going for. Edward all blazered up in tweed and navy didn’t exactly burn up my loins. EclipseWard saw some improvement under Slade’s direction: back to jeans and t-shirts, thankfully. But there was nothing that stood out as far as his look went, other than the fact that I felt his sideburns were way long and too bushy. It was an improvement over NewMoonWard, but still not TwilightWard-hot. (For the record, Bill Condon seems to be doing a fab job on Breaking Dawn from what we’ve seen, but I’ll wait until I see the finished product before I pass judgement on his Edward.)

Hair was another component that fell “flat” in New Moon & Eclipse. Nothing comes close to the bouffant in Twilight. I know peeps love to hate it and make fun of it. It’s been the subject of numerous parodies and SNL skits. But I heart it. It’s very Edwardian. It’s one of the most common elements that most FicWards posess: the sex hair. That’s all Twi, and that’s all CHardy. She saw how hot Rob looked with the longer hair and how sexy it was when Stew ran her fingers through it as they kissed. UNFFF. I know hair and makeup artists are generally responsible for these aspects, but the team is hired by the Director so it all falls back on Cathy in the end.
Or did it have more to do with the fact that Catherine was an indie director, and the men have all directed bigger budget films before? She was able to focus more on the “little things,” like getting Edward’s hair just right and making sure he was dressed like a high school student because she didn’t have to worry so much about action sequences and Jacob’s abs. I think it’s probably a combination of both. But as a woman, Cathy knew that Rob was a hottie in the making, and we all know Stew saw something special in him from the first audition.
